Austin Scarlett is a New York designer whose work has been described as “magic” and “a tour de force” (The New York Times), “worthy of a goddess” (Elle), “technically innovative and aesthetically sublime” (Madame Figaro) and he is a “bright young thing” (Artforum).Born in Cottage Grove, Oregon, Austin has been designing since he was a child.Following his passion, Scarlett moved to New York as a teenager to pursue his education in fashion design, studying at the Art Students League of New York and The Fashion Institute of Technology. After graduating, he continued to hone his talents in dressmaking as an apprentice fashion archivist at the Museum at FIT, and a theatrical costume design assistant and pattern maker.
As fashion historian and expert, Austin has lectured at Yale, New York Public Library, Parsons School of Design, and the University of Texas. He authored the book “Forever Scarlett, the Immortal Style of Gone with the Wind”.He has designed costumes for David Parson's Dance on PBS, Juilliard, Fort Worth Opera, The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and Shen Wei Dance Arts at the Park Avenue Armory and Metropolitan Museum of Art.Image Credit: Darren Michaels/Lifetime Television As the owner of one of the shortest attention spans known to TV land, I’m often hesitant about fully committing to a new series. What was nice about Rosaline (as well as Sadie, the subject of last week’s season premiere) was the fact that she was totally sympathetic without ever asking for sympathy and inspiring — without the show overbearingly shoving the “inspirational” message down our throats. As one might expect, between her tour of duty in Iraq, her education, and motherhood, our protagonist had found little time in recent years to make fashion a priority. Rosaline Johnson was in need of a dress for her graduation party. That’s a nice change of pace for a reality makeover show.Cut to our designing duo for some dress-making and plantation antics. I’m finding that the show really has less to do with fashion and more to do with the effect fashion has on people. As a follow-up to a show like , I wouldn’t want it any other way.Of course, this wouldn’t be an episode with hilarious sound bites. These were my favorites: “She’s actually graduating with her Master’s, which will make her a Captain and a master.” — Austin “In my past life, I was definitely a Belle and wore a hoop skirt every day” — Austin “Austin Scarlett O’Hara.” — Santino “Oh grandpapa, why couldn’t you ever accept me?
